modern defence I seem to transpose into the scilian dragon when playing this opening- I started playing it to get away from playing the sicilian. after e4 g6 d4 Bg7 Nc3 I play c5(d6 almost always goes into a pric) is there another move?????

When I was young ...and lazy. I only ever played the Modern Defence as it is one of the few defences that can be played against ANY White opening. Hence, being lazy, I only ever had to learn one sequence of moves. I always played 3.d6 with the eventual aim of providing enough support to enable me to play e7-e5. Prior to making this pawn break I would position my Kingside Rook on e8 and my Queenside Knight on d7.

However, bitter experience coupled with some mindbogglingly boring games taught me that this opening did not play to my strengths, so I abandoned the Modern Defence some time ago !!

Kind regards,

Cal

3... c6 has been played with mixed success.

3... Nc6!? is possible, but also probably transposes into a pirc after 4. Nf3 d6.

3... b6 leads to a double fianchetto--not highly recommended.

3... a6, e6, and 3... e5 have all been tried, but none are particularly recommended.

Finally, if you want to get away from the sicilian, why play 3... c5? It just transposes back after 4. Nf3 cxd4. (or 4. Nf3 Nc6 5. Be3 cxd4) Other tries to avoid a sicilian seem to leave black backward in development, although 4... Qa5!? is interesting.

what's wrong with the Pirc? If you like the modern defense, you must have the Pirc in your repertoire, in my opinion the pirc is simply a more solid way of playing a hypermodern defense than the 1...g6 lines.
